The waiter had just dropped off some warm apple pie to top off the dinner Myke and Mel had just shared. Mel enjoyed spending time with new friends. It was a rare and special treat and Myke was such good company. His stories went on and on throughout dinner.
As they dug into their pie Myke talked of love and how he had met his wife. Myke beamed as he talked of her. Mel couldn’t help but smile seeing him talk with such passion for her. A warm feeling washed over her. Maybe it was the pie, maybe it was the love that Myke expressed for his wife, but whatever it was, it was comforting and welcomed.
“How about you my dear, haven’t you been in love?”
Mel shifted uncomfortably in her seat, afraid to answer the question. Afraid that the mere mention of it would make the pain resurface. Mel sluggishly smiled in an attempt to thwart the question.
“You know my dear; there is no agony like bearing an untold story inside you.” “I know you have one, it is written all over your face at this very moment.”
“Yes… I have been in love, who hasn’t?”
“Well then, let’s hear it.”
“My story doesn’t have a happy ending Myke. No one wants to hear a story that doesn’t have a happy ending. It’s unfulfilling.”
“Well…. I want to hear it, better out than in I always say.”
Mel giggled at Myke’s response. She already knew she was in for it and she was going to spill the beans. There was just something about Myke that made it easy to share with him.
She began to tell the story of the man she fell in love with. A man who told her from the beginning, he didn’t believe in love. Yet as their bond grew she saw through the walls, through the fakeness of his statements. He was just like everyone else. He too wanted to be loved and to be known. Over time she felt herself slipping and falling for this man. It scarred her to death. After fighting the feeling for so long, she surrendered. She then embraced her love and shared it with him. And for fleeting moments…… it was wonderful. But with the circumstances that surrounded them…… it began to get complicated. Actually it was always complicated, but when you are in love it doesn’t seem to matter, cause where there is a will there is a way. Soon he began to doubt himself, and his worthiness of her love. It then turned into doubt of her, if she was who she said she was and if her intentions were true. It became a battle of proof and who could make the better argument, and he always won. He was always better with words, even if half of them were bullshit. Before long he stopped believing all together. He gave up on the two of them and pushed her away.
“Now do you see why I wasn’t excited to share?”
“Actually I thought it was a great story. I bet you even feel better for sharing it don’t you.”
Mel took a minute…..” Not really…..” Tears filled her eyes and her head dropped to hide the pool of tears.
“You know what hurt the most, it wasn’t that he didn’t love me as much as I loved him, or that he was afraid, it was that he didn’t believe in me and he just gave up. Just turned his back on me and pretended I never existed.”
“You know Mel, not everyone can take the chance and fall in love. Some people are too afraid. You shouldn’t be sad my dear….. You were true to yourself and that is all that matters. I wish it had worked out for you but it didn’t. The truth of the matter is, you can’t hold onto something that wants to go. You can only love it while you got it, and that’s it.”
Mel nodded…… “I know I just wanted it so badly.” “Love for me has been like an entertainment stand that requires assembly…….. Only my box came with a disclaimer on the bottom that said, directions not included.” “It never gets put together….. And if it does, it doesn’t withhold for long.”
Myke and Mel both giggled. Her head was pounding from reliving the story in her mind. She began to rub her temples.
“My head is killing me.”
“Perhaps we should call it a night.”
They both agreed and Myke motioned the waiter for the check. Shortly after the waiter returned, he slipped the bill to Myke and a card with two Tylenol on it to Mel. Mel and Myke both looked at each other questioningly. Mel read the card out loud.
“Take two and call me in the morning.”
Mel’s faced flushed with embarrassment and Myke began to chuckle. They both began laughing at the irony of what had happened.
“Now that is what you call great timing,” said Myke.
“Yeah, guess I should go out to dinner with you more often.”
After enjoying one last laugh they decided to call it a night. Hugs were exchanged and plans were made to do it again. As Myke turned to go out the door he shouted, “Don’t forget to call him in the morning!”
